The test shows two lines. Or a little plus sign. Or the word “Pregnant” on the digital screen.

And for a moment, you just sit there.

Maybe you cry. 

Maybe you laugh. 

Maybe you take three more tests just to be sure. 

Whatever you felt in that moment, that mix of joy, disbelief, and “oh god, what do I do now,” is completely normal. 

Every mother has been there.

But once the moment settles, a hundred questions start showing up. 

What do I eat? 

What do I avoid? 

When do I see a doctor? 

Is what I’m feeling normal?

First things first, breathe.

You do not need to have everything figured out today. 

The first trimester runs from week 1 to week 12, and while it is one of the most important phases of your pregnancy, it is also one of the most misunderstood.

Most of what you read online will either scare you or overwhelm you. So let’s keep this simple and real.

See a Gynecologist as soon as upt is positive or you suspect that you are pregnant

This is the one thing that matters more than anything else on this list.

Not because something is wrong. But because early care changes outcomes. 

A good obstetrician will confirm your pregnancy, calculate your due date, check for any early concerns, and give you a personalised plan. Not a generic one from the internet.

Your body is going to feel strange. That’s okay.

Nobody really prepares you for how the first trimester feels. Here is what is actually going on.

The nausea is real. Despite being called “morning sickness,” it can hit you at 2 pm, at dinner, or right in the middle of a meeting. 

Eating small meals throughout the day helps more than eating three large ones. Keep dry biscuits nearby. 

Avoid strong smells if you can. And if you find yourself unable to keep any food or water down, call your doctor. That needs attention.

The exhaustion is not laziness. You may feel like you could sleep for 14 hours and still wake up tired. 

That is your body building a placenta from scratch. It is doing more than you realise. Rest. Seriously, rest.

The emotions will surprise you. One moment you are fine. The next you are crying because a biscuit broke. 

Hormonal changes in the first trimester are intense and unpredictable. This does not mean something is wrong with you. It means you are pregnant.

Frequent bathroom trips are part of the deal. Your kidneys are working harder and your uterus is pressing on your bladder. Keep drinking water anyway.

Some things need to stop immediately

This is not about judgement. It is about your baby’s safety during a window of development that cannot be replicated.

Stop smoking. Stop alcohol completely, because there is genuinely no safe amount during pregnancy. 

Avoid unprescribed medications, including common painkillers. 

Cut caffeine down to one cup of coffee a day or less.

Also be more careful with food. Raw meats, undercooked eggs, unpasteurised dairy, and certain types of fish high in mercury like shark or swordfish are best avoided entirely during pregnancy.

These are small changes. The reason behind each one is real.

Get your blood tests done early

Your gynecologist will prescribe a set of blood and urine tests in your first trimester. Please do not put these off.

They check for anaemia, blood group and Rh factor, thyroid levels, blood sugar, and infections like Hepatitis B, HIV, and Rubella. 

In India, anaemia and thyroid issues during pregnancy are extremely common, and both are completely manageable when caught early.

These tests are not about assuming something is wrong. They are about making sure everything stays right.

Know when to call your doctor immediately

Most pregnancies progress without complications. But your body will sometimes send signals that need attention right away. Do not Google them. Call your doctor.

Watch out for heavy bleeding or large clots, severe abdominal pain that does not ease up, high fever, burning or pain while urinating, sudden swelling of your face or hands, and feeling faint or dizzy without an obvious reason.
